Winner anounced of AsOne's Find a Playwright competition
Wartime Memories brought to life. AsOne Theatre has selected Purbeck based playwright Nell Denton, with the unique opportunity to write a multi-media theatre piece for AsOne’s Spring 2009 tour. For several months AsOne Theatre Company has been searching for a writer for their Hey Baby! project - a series of stories revealing women's experience of pregnancy from conception to birth . The final shortlisted writers were Corfe based, Nell Denton and Clare Redway from Bath. Both talented women were invited to present their proposal for the play, 'Hey Baby!' to a panel of judges kindly hosted by the Portland Spa Conference Centre. These judges included; AsOne Artistic Director - Jane McKell, Dorset Echo Managing Director - Paul Kinvig, award winning novelist- Minette Waters and West End actor & Director - Jamie Chapman. Jane said " We are delighted to have Nell onboard. The two finalists were incredibly talented and it was difficult to choose but we had to choose the one who was closest to the brief. We felt Nell just pipped Clare to the post - more in tune with what Hey Baby! was about - the decision was unanimous." Paul Kinvig said he was thrilled to have taken part and "what I found really interesting was the idea of taking real stories from real women and making a piece of theatre with some fanastically diverse and challenging themes. Nell and Clare presented two very different treatments and tackled these very rich stories in very different ways. I think what will come out of it will be a piece of theatre that is both funny and heart-rending " A rehearsed reading of Nell's play will take place at the Portland Spa, Southwell Business Park this November. Dorset’s AsOne Theatre raise Hidden Treasure - Dorset's wartime past was brought to life to help promote understanding of the County's culture. A composer, Simon Swarbrick was commissioned to write The Hey Baby Suite in five movements: Pre-Conception/Conception; First Trimester; Second Trimester; Third Trimester and finally Labour/Birth. To compliment the music, writer, Paul Hyland joined Jane McKell in two workshops where they asked the women to put themselves in ‘Baby’s booties’ and imagine, given a voice, what Baby might have said. Paul Hyland then created a series of five poems depicting Baby’s journey underscored by Simon Swarbrick’s music. There are many stories leading up to and prevailing at the moment of conception, during pregnancy and birth. The parent’s stories are as equally complex and unique as they are simple and universal. A journey of sharing, learning, resolving, bonding and healing - Hey Baby! Curves & AsOne Theatre Wessex AsOne Theatre looked for a business to benefit from a partnership with touring theatre; Curves (women’s fitness centres) franchisees in 6 tour towns were a perfect match. AsOne’s tour target audience for the show “Let’s Do It!” was women of 40+ which was ideal for raising Curves’ profile and expanding membership throughout five counties of Wessex.
Working together, AsOne and the independent businesses (who individually did not have resources to develop such partnerships), built great rapport with the customer’s experience at heart. It enabled both partners to reach new audiences, improve reputations, raise profile, and build brand identity in a creative way. The partnership and promotional synergies benefited both staff and clients and they supported Breakthrough, Breast Cancer Research with collections throughout the tour. |
